The Royal Family (opens in new tab) is giving the public an inside look at the palace's most recent renovation. On Sunday, the official Instagram account of the royal family released a video to fans showing the inside of the ongoing wallpaper preservation project in the east wing's yellow drawing room.
Hello (open in new tab)! Magazine (opens in new tab) reports that the renovation will cost 369 million pounds. The video shared by the Royal Family shows how the money (or at least part of it) is being spent.
"We remove the beautiful 19th century Chinese wallpaper very carefully, piece by piece. Then we bring it back to the studio to preserve it and save it for the future," wallpaper conservator Allison McDermott explains in the video. 'This is a great opportunity. We need to preserve the paper. It is very acidic. It is very fragile. And this is a great opportunity to do that while all the work is being done at the palace."
[8In a lengthy caption to the video, the royal family explains:
"Watch as the historic 19th century wallpaper from the Yellow Drawing Room is carefully removed for conservation. This work will not only restore the rare and fragile wallpaper, but also protect it from damage caused by nearby construction as part of a conservation program. Once the work is complete, the restored wallpaper will be returned to its original location in the yellow parlor.
"The repair program is essential to reduce the risk of fire and flooding and ensures that the old wiring is up to current health and safety standards. The renovations will also improve visitor access and make the palace more energy efficient.
"The east wing of Buckingham Palace, designed by Edward Blore in the 1840s, was built for Queen Victoria to provide more entertaining and living space for her expanding family. Blois' design included the famous central balcony on the front facade of the palace, which was incorporated at the suggestion of Lord Albert. Since then, this balcony has been used for many national events, including the annual "Trooping the Colour."
