Hearst Foundation Donates $50 Million to Fight Coronavirus

The Hearst Foundation (opens in new tab) announced Thursday that it will provide more than $50 million in emergency funding to more than 100 medical, humanitarian, and cultural organizations in the United States that have been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The funds are expected to reach the organizations within the next 10 days. [The announcement was made by William Randolph Hearst III and Virginia Hearst Rand, presidents of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation in California and the Hearst Foundation in New York, and former CEO of the Hearst Corporation (parent company of T&C) and donor to both foundations committee chaired by Frank A. The two foundations are not alone in investing their financial resources in relief efforts against the new coronavirus. [In 2019, the Hearst Foundation has awarded 81 grants (open in new tab) worth $9.3 million to organizations in 27 states, including support for The Juilliard School, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and several major university medical school programs.

Since its inception, the Hearst Foundation has distributed more than 21,000 grants to nearly 6,000 different organizations

The Hearst Foundation was founded in 1946 by William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper and magazine publisher; in 1949, he founded California Charities Foundations, which was later renamed the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Both foundations, independent of the Hearst Corporation, are guided by the same charitable mission and serve as a national philanthropic resource for organizations working in the fields of culture, education, health care, and social services.
