If you love the moon, you know last year was a big year: 2019 opened with three (yes, three) supermoons (open in new tab) and a solar eclipse (open in new tab), and 2020 had a lot to live up to. 2020 has disappointed in every way, and this year While we won't see another lunar trifecta, there are a few solar events to look forward to: two supermoons, a blue moon, and 13 full moons during 2020.

This spring, the moon looked especially large, earning supermoon status. The first moon of May, also known as the "flower moon," will be visible on May 7 and 8, or Thursday morning and evening through Friday morning; according to NASA, it is also a "supermoon. It appears largest at moonrise and moonset.

The real fun comes this October. This is the only month of the year when there are two full moons, and the second and final full moon will be a "blue" full moon. Even more unusually, the October blue moon occurs on Halloween; according to meteorologist Brian Rada of AccuWeather (opens in new tab), "After the October 31, 2020 blue moon, trick-or-treaters will have to wait until 2039 to see the next blue moon on Halloween They will have to wait until 2039 to see the next blue moon on Halloween." This is definitely an event not to be missed.
