Finally, Reese Witherspoon will reprise her role as Elle Woods in the third "Legally Blonde" film, nearly 20 years after the first (and 17 years after the forgotten sequel.) In June 2018, Deadline (opens in new tab) reported that MGM and Witherspoon were " Legally Blonde 3" and reported that they were close to finalizing a deal. And yesterday, Deadline (opens in new tab) reported (opens in new tab) that Mindy Kaling and Dan Gouaux will write the film's script.

This means that the script is not even written yet, which means that the release date for "Legally Blonde 3" is still quite some time away. This is also still a long way off, as production will probably not move forward anytime soon due to the coronavirus.

Initially, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullough, who wrote the screenplay for the first film based on Amanda Brown's novel of the same name, were scheduled to return as screenwriters for Legally Blonde 3. That no longer appears to be the case.

There are other things we know about the film.

Specifically, February 14, 2020, according to MGM's announcement on Twitter.

Then it was supposed to be released in May 2020, hmmm, now it's May 2020, but there is no sign of the movie.

And the famous sequined bikini Elle wore when applying to Harvard may be making a comeback: on June 7, 2018, the actress took to Twitter to share a video of herself floating across a pool like Elle Woods, with the words "It's true." (open in new tab) was shared. No other cast members have been identified.

Witherspoon will sit in the producer's chair with Pratt and Siegel under his production company Hello Sunshine. Note: Hello Sunshine is also the company that brought us Big Little Lies. The company also recently produced the film adaptation of Celeste Ng's book "Little Fires Everywhere" for Hulu.

Again from Deadline's report: the third film will likely continue the message of female empowerment.

In March 2017, Witherspoon joked about a possible storyline for her character during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. When Corden suggested a seat at the White House, Witherspoon said, "She could be a Supreme Court justice, she could be like a really great and powerful lawyer, she could be in prison. She could be anything."
