Former first lady Michelle Obama issued a statement on the importance of eradicating racism and self-examination in the wake of the murder of George Floyd (opens in new tab).

She opened her post by stating that she was "exhausted by the heartbreak that has never stopped," and continued, "Now it is George, Breanna (opens in new tab), and Ahmoud (opens in new tab). Before that, it was Eric, Sandra, and Michael. It goes on and on. Race and racism are realities that many of us grow up learning to just deal with. But if we want to move beyond it, we cannot let people of color deal with it alone." [It's about] doing the honest, uncomfortable work to eradicate it, no matter how well-intentioned, by everyone, black or white," Michelle writes. It begins with self-reflection and listening to those whose lives are different from our own." It ends with justice, compassion, and empathy showing up in our lives and in our cities. I pray that all of us have the strength for that journey, just as I pray for the souls and families of those who have been taken from us."
