Princess Eugenie, granddaughter of the Queen of England, shared a photo of her scoliosis surgery scar on Instagram Saturday in honor of International Scoliosis Awareness Day. Eugenie was diagnosed with scoliosis as a child and underwent major surgery at age 12.

"I want to share my scars and if anyone else has gone through a similar experience, please share it with me. Be proud of your scars!"

The royal has spoken frequently about her scoliosis in recent years, and in 2018 she shared an episode of her surgery in support of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, where she was treated. She wrote (opens in new tab), "During the surgery, which took eight hours, the surgeon inserted eight-inch titanium rods on each side of my spine and a 1.5-inch screw into the top of my neck."

"After three days in the intensive care unit, I spent a week in a hospital room and six days in a wheelchair, after which I was able to walk again."

In October 2018, Eugenie wed Jack Brooksbank in a wedding dress (opens in new tab) specially designed to show off her scars, as reported by the BBC (opens in new tab), on the British morning show This Morning, she explained that it was "a lovely way to honor those who have looked after me, and also a way to stand up for young people who are going through similar experiences."

"I think it can change the way beauty looks, and it can show people the scars. I think it's really special to stand up for that," she said.
