Is there a sequel to Netflix's "The Old Guard"?

Spoilers ahead for The Old Guard. Starring Charlize Theron (open in new tab), Kiki Layne, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Netflix's latest film, "The Old Guard," portrays a group of "real-life superheroes" who have been functionally immortal for hundreds or thousands of years. Led by Andy (Theron), the quartet hides from the world and attempts to achieve anonymous justice. A fifth, Nile (Raine), joins their group of mercenaries. Nile is a former Marine who is just beginning to understand his newfound abilities. Fans of the original comic book now join those who never heard of The Old Guard, almost all of whom have doubts about the possibility of a sequel. [Frankly, the movie is pretty cool, and it's a fun take on the idea of what immortality actually is and why it's not all about immortality. It also features two gay "superheroes," Marwan Kensari as Joe and Luca Marinelli as Nicky, who are proudly in love and have been together for centuries. Does this mean that the franchise is about to begin?

Spoilers. At the end of the film, one character (Booker, played by Matthias Schoenaerts) is banished for 100 years for betraying the rest of his people. He runs into Quinn (Van Veronica Ngo). Quinn is the sixth lost member of the group, trapped in an iron coffin, thrown overboard, and drowned over and over again for 500 years (Ung). She somehow escapes from her water prison, wears red clothes and drinks water (!). . If there is a sequel, the villain may have already been chosen.

Meanwhile, the other four mercenaries team up with Copley (Ejiofor) to continue quietly doing good in the world. There's a lot to cover, is what I'm saying.

No comic spoilers here, but the comic continues after the events of the film (open in new tab) In an interview with Total Film, Theron said, "We went into this film talking about the possibility [of a sequel]... And that's definitely something that excites us," he explained.

Comic book author and screenwriter Greg Rucka told SyFy (open in new tab),

"Look, it's absolutely dishonest to say that we didn't put a scene in the film that says, 'For a sequel, break glass. It's very easy to light that fuse and move on to the second story. But for me, personally, this is very important. It is not accidental. ...... This is not one of those films that, when it's over, the audience thinks, 'Oh, great, now we have to wait two years for the next one. We don't need to make another movie to finish the story. We are very grateful for that. So if this film is successful, I'm sure there will be talk of a sequel. At this point, I don't know what further discussions will take place or if there are any plans to do so."

In other words, fans who like the film should keep watching and telling their friends to do the same.
