Read MoreWhile Princess Beatrice and her fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi had an intimate ceremony (open in new tab) in Windsor on Friday, royal fans did not get a glimpse of her beautiful dress until today. The happy couple waited a day to release their wedding photos so as not to overshadow the investiture (opens in new tab) of Captain Tom Moore, a World War II veteran who raised more than 33 million pounds ($41 million) for the NHS and health charities during his incarceration.
But the gown was worth the wait. This afternoon, Buckingham Palace unveiled two stunning portraits by photographer Benjamin Wheeler, showcasing Beatrice's surprising (and very stylish) choice.
Beatrice's dress, on loan from the queen, is described in a statement from the palace as "made of Pau de Soie taffeta in shades of ivory, trimmed with ivory duchess satin and with organza sleeves. 'It is studded with diamantes and the bodice is geometrically checkered.' The monarch's trusted dressmaker Angela Kelly (opens in new tab) and designer Stewart Purvin, who specializes in bridal design, refashioned and fitted vintage garments especially for Beatrice.
Old photographs of the dress, which the queen wore at least twice in the 1960s (to the premiere of Lawrence of Arabia and to an official dinner in Rome), show that it originally had a slightly different shape. It had a voluminous hem and no sleeves.
Like many royal brides before her, the princess matched her wedding dress with a stunning tiara. Beatrice chose to wear the Queen Mary Diamond Fringe Tiara, the very same tiara that Queen Elizabeth wore for her wedding (and that Princess Anne later borrowed for herself) (opens in new tab).
In keeping with royal tradition, a beautiful bouquet containing sprigs of myrtle and a ring designed by Sean Lane, who also designed the engagement ring, completed Princess Beatrice's wedding look.
