'Diana Diana: A True Musical Story' Heads to the Small Screen Before Broadway

In an unexpected but exciting turn of events for royal fans, "Diana: A True Musical Story" is coming to Netflix in early 2021. The musical, about the last years of Diana Spencer (open in new tab), was scheduled to open on March 31, a week and a half before its Broadway previews, when a coronavirus pandemic forced the show to be canceled. But on Wednesday, the musical's producers announced that it will first premiere on the streaming giant before premiering on Broadway on May 25, 2021. The performance will join a lineup of other live shows already on Netflix, including Kerry Washington's (open in new tab) "American Son" and "Shrek the Musical."

"On behalf of the company, I want to say that we couldn't be more excited to share our shows with theater fans around the world. There is no substitute for live theater, and we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides to subscribers around the world," said the show's producers about this unprecedented move, according to The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) The Hollywood Reporter (opens new tab).

The musical event will reportedly be filmed soon at the Longacre Theatre in New York City with the original cast of the musical; because of COVID-19, no audience members will appear.

Gina de Waal, who stars as the late People's Princess, previously told PEOPLE (opens in new tab) about the challenges of playing someone who is adored around the world." People will look at you and decide within two seconds whether they're going to buy it or not. If they don't buy it, it's going to be hard for them to enjoy or immerse themselves in the story."

Whether the musical is any good remains to be seen, but we know we are already fans of making theater more accessible.
