Serenators, rejoice: Selena Gomez's first beauty brand, Rare Beauty (opens in new tab) - a collection of liners, luminizers, lips, and 48 complexion shades - has not only launched at Sephora (opens in new tab), but Rare lip balm to faithfully recreate Gomez's look in the video for her brilliant BLACKPINK collaboration, "Ice Cream (opens in new tab)." To personally introduce the launch, Selena herself hopped on Zoom with her editor last Friday to answer questions and show off her signature red lips (courtesy of a rare beauty lip souffle matte lip balm called Inspire (opens in new tab)) and glossy blowout.

Here are some choice highlights from the virtual meetup:

"I started working when I was 7 years old. So my relationship with makeup has always evolved. I think there were moments in that process where I didn't feel my best. Maybe I'm self-critical. I compare myself to others. I wanted to break those standards. I wanted to make "beauty" accessible. I feel like makeup can transform you. In film and television, makeup creates a person's character. In music, it can almost be the point of a video. There is complete beauty in it. [Beauty] is meant to be yours. And it has to be something that you know what you are doing. I feel that this is exactly how makeup should be, not professionally. It is an accessory, something you are proud to wear, something that highlights what makes you feel beautiful."

"[My mother] was such an icon. The Drew Barrymore cut, the little safety pin on her shirt, the butterfly clip. She was so cool to me, almost like a sister. We have such a relationship, friendship, and more. When she had me she was very young and working multiple jobs. When I was in Dallas, she started working in makeup at a modeling agency. So I could go with her and see what she was doing. At night, my mother would go to her room, open her makeup box, light candles, and play music. I think that was like therapy for my mother. I went to her room and sat next to her in the mirror and did her makeup. She had a little wine and gave me a little apple juice. I will never forget that memory.

"I learned a few tricks from makeup artist Hun [Vango] (open in new tab): one is to apply [blush (open in new tab)] more on top so it blends in and doesn't give too much redness to the cheeks. scotch on YouTube (open in new tab) I also learned a few tricks with the tape eyeshadow."

"I love red; it's my favorite color. [The fuchsia I wore in BLACKPINK's collaboration with Ice Cream is Ascend (opens in new tab). When my sister comes home, she's going to love playing with makeup. Finding moments of joy is what keeps me going, whether it's seeing what my sister, friends, or people around the world are doing."

"The first and most important thing (in creating Rare Beauty) was the foundation (opens in new tab). I tend to like very breathable makeup, something you don't feel too much of. And by having 48 shades, we made it easy for people to find (what suits them).

"I've been very open about my struggles with anxiety, depression, and mental health. I can say that the time I've taken for myself is actually reflected in everything I've released. And I don't know if anyone can tell or cares, but I could see how happy I am with what I've been given and what I've been blessed with. I started the [Rare Impact] Fund to raise $100 million over 10 years for mental health research and researchers. I have participated in several (fund) conversations and the women are remarkable. Women with children, business women, young girls who just want to take cute selfies. So I would say that there is beauty in imperfection."
