Yara Shahidi's Barbie to be re-released with "voting" accessories
Exciting news: Yara Shahidi's (open in new tab) Barbie doll is finally available for purchase. The doll's re-release is not only to emphasize the importance of registering to vote (opens in new tab), but also to teach the younger generation that regardless of their age, they too can make a difference.
Last spring, Barbie honored the Grown-ish star (opens in new tab) with a doll in honor of the company's 60th anniversary and International Women's Month. Yara Shahidi Barbie was one of the brand's new line of inspirational "Shero" dolls, which also featured famous badasses like model and activist Adwoa Aboah and tennis champion Naomi Osaka (opens in new tab).
Mattel, Shahidi, and Shahidi's mother worked together to design the doll, find the right hair texture and skin tone, and pick the perfect outfit. The "Actress's Choice" gray suit was paired with a colorful Tory Burch "Vote" limited edition T-shirt (opens in new tab) and a black backpack with an "I Voted" sticker. Consider this my attire from now until Election Day.
Last year, Shahidi discussed the process of how the doll came together with Marie Claire (opens in new tab): "It's important for Mattel to make sure that this doll is a true representation of me, in a way that I really like and that is true to what I think Yara really is Because I know that it is really important to me to make sure that the doll is a true representation of who I am. Everything from my outfit to my curls to my eyebrows is something we discussed."
[8When asked what advice she would give to young girls who feel like their voice doesn't matter, the Black-ish actress reflected on her own experience and how she learned to push through.
"What was important to me was that we had a support network that was dedicated to helping us succeed, not just us as individuals. People dedicated to breaking down barriers." The freedom we experience is due to other women who give their time, money, energy, and presence to us." [To get your hands on this collection doll, go to Barbie.com (opens in a new tab). Of course, you'll have to register to vote.
