Celebrities Speak Out After Cop Who Killed Bryna Taylor Is Not Directly Charged in Her Death

Breanna Taylor, a black emergency medical technician (opens in new tab), was shot at least five times in her Louisville apartment on the night of March 13 after white police officers Brett Hankison, Myles Cosgrove, and Jonathan Mattingly broke through her door, totaling 32 She was hit by a bullet. Taylor died on the hallway floor.

A Kentucky grand jury declined to indict the officers in Taylor's death, CNN announced yesterday (opens in new tab). Hankison was charged with willful endangerment for recklessly firing into his neighbor's apartment. Many celebrities took to social media on Wednesday to condemn the verdict, calling for the officers to be charged in Taylor's death and blaming the racist justice system. Dwyane Wade published a photo of Taylor on Instagram with a touching letter to her. 'Dear Briona, I am so sorry that the powers that be could not get this right. You deserve so much more. Your life mattered. You were loved. You had a bright future ahead of you. It breaks our hearts that we cannot share all of this with you now. We continue to say your name. We will continue to fight in your name."

Sharing a news post about the verdict, Viola Davis tweeted, "Crap---judgment. Black lives matter. I can't say it enough times.

Vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris also reacted to the verdict on Twitter." Tonight, I'm thinking about the family of Breanna Taylor, who is still grieving the loss of her daughter and sister," she wrote. As we work to reform our justice system, including a review of the no-knock warrant, we must never stop speaking Breona's name."

Journalist Nicholas Wu tweeted a response to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's verdict, which Ocasio-Cortez retweeted. She said, "Because we know that her death was not the fault of one person, but of a system, structure, and department that failed their entire community."

"Breanna Taylor's life was important. This outcome is a disgrace and an abdication of justice," Bernie Sanders tweeted. 'Our criminal justice system is racist. It is time for fundamental change."

Alicia Keys tweeted, citing the ACLU's reaction to the verdict, "This is a classic example of rotten to the core. Unjustified. Rude and blatant disregard. Outraged.

Yara Shahidi tweeted." Most insulting is that the recommended charges are not even against the murder of Breanna Taylor, but against the potential injury of others who were in the apartment." In a subsequent tweet (opens in new tab), she wrote, "'No Knock Warrant' feels similar to the experience of being black in America. An annoying intrusion of racism and violence dealt with on a daily basis." She continued.

Tracey Ellis Ross quoted an IGTV video by activist and author Brittany Packnett Cunningham, which she posted along with a photo of Taylor."
