Meghan Markle and Prince Harry pay for rent and renovations at Frogmore Cottage

After paying off the renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage (opens in new tab) earlier this month, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are now paying rent on their Windsor property; as reported by the Independent (opens in new tab), the Sussexes are paying rent on their home in England and just paid an "undisclosed amount" in advance to cover both the cost of further renovations.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a large donation to a Sovereign Grant that will cover the renovation and rental costs of Frogmore Cottage," a source told the paper. 'The method of reporting this donation has yet to be decided and must be agreed by the National Audit Office before it can be included in next year's accounts.'

On September 7, royal correspondent Omid Scobie confirmed that the Sussexes had repaid the 2.4 million pounds (about $3.1 million) in taxes they spent on the renovation of Frogmore Cottage. A spokesman for the couple told Scobie that "this donation, initially offered by Prince Harry, will fully fund the necessary renovations to Frogmore Cottage, which is Her Majesty's property and will continue to be the Duke and Duchess' home in the UK."

Meghan and Harry repaid the renovation costs after signing a multimillion-dollar deal to produce content for Netflix (opens in new tab) In January, after announcing they were stepping down as senior members of the royal family, the Sussexes expressed their desire to become financially independent. They achieved that goal this month (open in new tab), signing a deal with the giant Netflix.
