The 7-minute morning routine mastered by the founder and CEO of Lip Bar

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get through the day's work?

You may be familiar with The Lip Bar (opens in new tab) for its bold liquid lip color range. But this vegan, cruelty-free brand has so much more to offer. "I was frustrated with the beauty industry," says CEO and founder Melissa Butler (opens in new tab), who left her Wall Street job in 2012. "Instead of complaining, I decided that Lip Bar would be the solution. I wanted to create a company that offered quality products for all complexions, in beautiful packaging, at affordable prices. What we evolved into was a company that made makeup easy. Eight years later, after an appearance on Shark Tank, Butler has grown the brand into a full clean makeup product line that celebrates inclusivity. The latest addition is a caffeine-infused concealer collection (opens in new tab). Below, the beauty maven presents a 24-hour snapshot of how she gets everything done.

I wake up between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. Instead, I let my body tell me when I've had enough sleep. The first thing I do when I'm at my best is meditate and journal. Otherwise, I check my cell phone.

For skin care, I use a variety of products. Start with Rosen Skincare's Super Smoothie Cleanser (opens in new tab) or Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser (opens in new tab). Then add Skin Food's Propolis Essence (opens in new tab), Sunday Riley's Good Jeans (opens in new tab), and finish with an oil or moisturizer. Finally, moisturize lips with Lip Bar's transparent gloss, Minimalist (opens in new tab). Preparation takes up to 7 minutes. This includes doing a mini version of The Lip Bar's Fast Face Kit (opens in new tab). Quick Draw 2 Side Brows (opens in new tab), Minute Finish Face Palette (opens in new tab), put on lips and go. Fast Face was created to help with the things I don't want to focus on in my morning beauty routine.

During quarantine, I was very lazy with my hair. I put it in a protective style, like braids, so that I didn't have to think about anything. Four hours in the chair with braids will set my hair free for four weeks. Its worth it. If my hair is frizzy and slightly curly, I pin my hair up at night into a loosely curled bun with my fingers. In the morning, just let your hair down and the curls stay.

Red lips, orange-tinged cheeks, bronze highlighter, stud earrings, and pin-up type voluminous hair. The cheeks and highlighter are from my favorite lip bar product, Stuntin' from the Minute Finish Face palette (opens in new tab).

I make a cup of apple cider vinegar tea every morning, great for pH balance and digestion. I've been drinking it daily for years. My breakfast these days is smoked salmon and fruit.

If I don't eat as soon as I get out of bed, nothing happens. I like boot camp classes that combine strength and cardio. While in isolation, my favorite thing to do is ride my bike. I ride about 10 miles every morning. It's fast but peaceful cycling.

What keeps me grounded is connecting with nature. It reminds me how big the world is and that everything has a purpose. I go into nature, appreciate it so much, and journal. That clears my mental space and helps me to be super focused.

I often block out trauma and drama to protect my mental health. We don't want to be constantly worrying. It can be debilitating. Lately, however, I've been taking a different approach. I stopped thinking about myself and started thinking about how to solve the causes instead of avoiding the consequences. I started an organization called The Blk Pact (opens in new tab) with the goal of helping to promote economic empowerment in the black community.

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (opens in new tab) - very masculine and warm.

Acupuncture. I had a knee injury and a few treatments really took the pain away.

Bawse Lady from The Lip Bar (opens in new tab) - $13 and the best red on the planet because it goes with any skin tone. Everyone needs a power red.

Just keep going. As long as you are in the game, it doesn't matter how many losses you have. What matters is how much you learned. I learned a lot from every job I had. My first job was at McDonald's. My last job was on Wall Street. From both experiences I learned that emotional intelligence is the key to life.

I was frustrated with the beauty industry. Lack of inclusivity, lack of originality, excessive amounts of chemicals, high price points, all of it. So instead of complaining, I decided that lip bars would be the solution. We wanted to create a company that offered high quality products for all complexions, in beautiful packaging, at affordable prices. What we have evolved into is a company that makes makeup easier.

Nighttime skin is all about pampering for me: washing my face with Avya's Gentle Cleanser (open in new tab), La Mer's Micellar Water (open in new tab), and sheet masks (I got a bunch when I went to Korea last year). Roll the sheet mask on a jade roller, leave it on for 15 minutes, and finally moisturize with Urban Skin Rx's Mega Moisture Illuminating Night Cream (opens in new tab), then apply Undefined Beauty's CBD Glow Elixir (opens in new (opens in a new tab) pressed into the face.

Hair is simply wrapped in a scarf. Super low maintenance. If my hair is feeling dry, I massage a dime-sized amount of Naturaclious' Spanish Almond Re-Growth Oil (opens in new tab) into my scalp (smells great) and then scarf it on.

Lip balm, Lit Brooklyn's Beau Candle (opens in new tab), and water.

Usually from 11 p.m. to midnight.
