[from buzz cut to pixie (opens in new tab) to bob (opens in new tab) to collarbone length (opens in new tab). I love getting my hair cut and would go every other day if I could. So whenever I leave the salon, I always ask, "When should I come back next time?" I ask. The answers have ranged from "in two months" to "don't come back until you literally can't stand it anymore and want a haircut." Needless to say, I always leave the salon confused.

At some point in your life, you've probably heard that six weeks is the magic number between haircuts. But in reality, the wait depends entirely on what you are trying to accomplish. For example, maintaining a pixie cut will require you to get trims more regularly than if you are trying to grow it out. Everything from style to hair texture to how often you use hot tools can affect how often you get your hair cut. So, stylists have answered this perennial question: how long should I leave between haircuts?

Not exactly, says Roger Azadoganian, owner of 8 the Salon (open in new tab) and founder of äz Craft Luxury Haircare (open in new tab), much of it comes down to the quality of the initial haircut. If the shape is cut correctly and well," says Azadganian, "it should last eight to 12 weeks. 'It depends as much on the quality of the cut as it does on the person's personality. It also depends on the style, says R+Co content director Adam Federico (opens in new tab)." Short hairstyles generally grow out a little faster, so I would say an average of eight weeks to keep a short look."

Hair health is also a big factor. Federico says, "Excessive heat damage from hot tools without proper heat protection can definitely result in more frequent trips to the haircut to keep hair properly maintained and healthy." If you are trying to grow out your hair and are using hot tools frequently, split ends can hinder hair growth. To get rid of split ends," Federico says, "you need to tame the ends. Federico says. Twelve weeks is ideal if you want to keep your ends healthy while letting your hair grow," says Oribe Educator Mandy Tauber (opens in new tab). If you just want to maintain your current hairstyle, six to eight weeks is just right, says Azad Ghanian.

"Texture has a big impact on how often you need to style your hair," says Tauber. 'Curly hair, by its very structure, is naturally prone to drying out. Oil from the scalp does not travel through the hair, making it dry and brittle. With this type of hair, it is important to maintain a healthy scalp to promote growth and to trim the ends every eight weeks to prevent split ends."

Trimming more frequently also helps curly girls keep their shape. Says Azad Ghanian, "In general, curly hair loses its shape faster than straight hair." To keep curly hair bouncy and gorgeous, trim it every two months to keep it looking its best.
