The biggest hair trends for 2020, according to celebrity stylists

But changing up your hairstyle can bring out something in you and give you a whole new sense of confidence, so to help you get creative for 2020, we spoke with celebrity hairstylists who are known for their trend predictions and provided a visual moodboard of styles. When you're on lockdown, it can sometimes be easy to forget that the simplest of hair tweaks can make all the difference in the world. Take, for example, Priyanka Chopra Jonas' new bangs. These airy, brow-ruffling bangs frame her face just right, creating an everyday look with very little effort. (This cut is especially great for those with naturally wavy hair that doesn't need repeated taming and smoothing.)

"The latest version of the mullet is a straight and curly hair people are equally good candidates," Vidov explains." The word "mullet" itself serves as a not-so-friendly reminder of a tasteless and controversial trend, but it got its very own makeover and a new name: shullet. It's like Mallet and Shag having a baby.

Vaccaro predicts, "From smart and snatched to textured and messy, you'll see this trend everywhere for 2020." 'I'm using Locks and Mane extensions to create fluffy ponies. I leave some in to frame the face and create a more ethereal look."

"Whether I'm pulling it high pony, low bun, or loose, it's always very classic, chic and elegant, love to create a sophisticated look," says celebrity stylist Millie Morales (opens in new tab) to the stars. "It's important to use a heat protectant before applying heat and a mask the night before to nourish and hydrate your hair. "In 2020, rich, vibrant hair color is about to make a huge comeback," says a Washington, D.C.-based stylist with Michelle Obama as a client, Yene Damtew (opens in new tab) explains.
"Many of my clients have steered away from pastels and balayage and are now leaning toward solid colors like full butter blonde, almond brown, and bright redheads."
In terms of overall color maintenance, Vidov suggests using Goldwell Gloss to seal tired ends, moisturize, and strengthen pigmentation. Red is getting a second look this year. It will be warmer and less hot. 'Red in 2020 is supposed to have a copper element to make it look believable and natural.' If you're going to highlight, make sure it's no lighter than two shades of existing red to blend perfectly," suggests celebrity colorist Matt Rez (opens in new tab).

"This year, Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan are going for awards ceremony red I saw them go low maintenance color with carpet, and I see this laid-back look taking hold in 2020," says Rez. To get this look, "avoid changing the base color and instead opt for a foiling technique to add light and depth for the most graceful re-growth. You can also ask for a 'shadow route' to prevent the regrowth from being too obvious."
