Earlier this week, Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed by the Senate on a 52-48 vote to become the 115th Supreme Court Justice. In response to the news, the official Twitter account of the Girl Scouts (opens in new tab) posted a congratulatory message on its feed. It was later deleted following criticism.

A screenshot of the now-deleted tweet was captured and reposted by a Fox 6 reporter. The caption of the first tweet read: "Congratulations to Amy Coney Barrett, the fifth female Supreme Court Justice since its creation in 1789. The post was accompanied by a photo (opens in new tab) with a headshot of Barrett alongside her colleagues Justice Elena Kagan, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

In response, a number of tweets were posted criticizing the tweet, one of which was from Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, who represents Massachusetts' 7th district. She wrote: "What kind of patch do you get for lifting up a woman who is the antithesis of justice?"

Others said they would boycott the annual Girl Scout cookie sale this year because of the post. Still others defended the Girl Scouts and said there was nothing wrong with the original tweet.

The Girl Scouts later published a thread of tweets explaining why they deleted the original post.

"It was immediately seen as a political and partisan statement, which was not our intent.

"The Girl Scouts of the USA is a non-political, non-partisan organization. We are neither red nor blue, we are Girl Scouts green. We are here to lift up girls and women."
