Kamala Harris Wears Two Black American Designers on Inauguration Day

On January 20, 2021, at 12:00 p.m., Kamala Devi Harris will officially become the first woman, the first black woman, and the first South Asian vice president of the United States.On November 7, when Harris was expected to be elected, women across the country, especially black and South Asian women, stressed the importance of their being the country's second highest position in the country (opens in new tab). On a day filled with historic moments, the excitement continues. [using a Bible once owned by the late Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court justice (opens in new tab), and another owned by Regina Shelton (opens in new tab), a close family friend Harris considers her second mother.

Harris's attire is also significant. During her oath of office, Harris wore her signature pearls (opens in new tab) designed by Wilfredo Rosado (opens in new tab)-in addition to designs by Christopher John Rogers (opens in new tab) and Sergio Hudson (opens in new tab). a nod to the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha - and an American flag lapel pin by David Yurman (opens in new tab). Rogers is a Brooklyn-based black designer from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Hudson is a black designer from South Carolina. Former first lady Michelle Obama also wears Hudson's designs (opens in new tab).

Not surprisingly, Twitter had a lot to say about Harris' outfit and praised her designer's choice.

Harris' outfit will remain iconic throughout her vice presidency. At the COVID-19 memorial service on the eve of the inauguration, Harris wore a Kirby Jean-Raymond coat by Pyer Moss (opens in new tab). Notably, Jean-Raymond collected PPE for hospital employees (opens in new tab) and provided a $50,000 grant to small businesses affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
