Newly-elected Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the American people in a chic all-black ensemble designed by Sergio Hudson at the inaugural "Celebrating America" concert on Wednesday, Harper's Bazaar (opens in new tab), the black American designer, who also dressed Harris for the swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day, created a sequined cocktail dress and floor-length silk tuxedo overcoat for the evening. She completed the look with statement earrings and Jimmy Choo "Romy" pumps.

"I kept the silhouette very structured and tailored because that's who the vice president is," Hudson told Harper's. 'Because her influence and the way she broke down barriers is a light to many of us. When she shines, we can all shine."

Harris' Wednesday speech was a response to President Biden's call for unity, as well as an eye toward a bright future based on hard work, ambition, and determination. Harris, of course, made history today as the first female, black, South Asian vice president of the United States.

At the afternoon event, the vice president opted for a more daring look, wearing her signature pearl-studded violet dress and coat (opens in new tab). Purple was a popular and symbolic choice for several politicians, subtly signaling a return to bipartisanship and the suffrage movement (opens in new tab).

Hudson also dressed Michelle Obama for her inauguration. The former first lady wore a plum-colored jacket over matching pants and sweater (opens in new tab) and set the Internet ablaze.
