Queen Elizabeth, Prince William, and Prince Charles are in a "crisis situation."
The Queen (opens in new tab), Prince Charles (opens in new tab), and Prince William (opens in new tab) are reportedly in crisis talks since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's explosive confessional interview with Oprah (opens in new tab). A palace insider tells royal reporter Rebecca English of the Daily Mail (opens in new tab) that there is a mood of "intense personal shock and sadness" and that people are pretty much spiraling out of control.
"Staff are upset," said one source. 'But there is also a strong sense that we must maintain a dignified silence and show kindness and compassion. There is so much to say, but no one wins in a touchy-feely battle. Ultimately, after all is said and done, bridges need to be built."
Apparently, palace staff watched the interview late into Sunday (the royal family did not (opens in new tab)) and prepared a briefing for the royal family. A crisis meeting was then coordinated in person and by telephone. At the moment Buckingham Palace is preparing a statement focusing on the royal love for Meghan and Harry, but Queen Elizabeth II is still reluctant to make an announcement.
Meanwhile, Prince Charles made his first public appearance since the announcement, visiting a vaccine pop-up clinic in the City of London (opens in new tab). During the visit, Prince Charles was asked by a reporter, "Sir, may I ask, what did you think of the interview?" and apparently smiled silently.
It was also reported that "William is devastated by the interview (opens in new tab)," and a source close to Prince Charles said a few days before the interview was broadcast that he was "desperate for an interview." Stay tuned for comment from Buckingham Palace (if the Queen releases comment).
