Why Jennifer Lopez ended her engagement to Alex Rodriguez

More details about why Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez ended their four-year relationship (opens in new tab) and two-year engagement, including who broke it off, have been revealed by several news organizations, including Page Six (opens in new tab) and Entertainment Tonight (opens in new tab), that it was ultimately a mutual decision, but Lopez had serious doubts.

A source told Entertainment Tonight (opens in new tab) that the two "decided their relationship had run its course." Lopez, in particular, had been on the fence about getting married after rumors of an affair about Rodriguez emerged last month." Jennifer felt it wasn't right to move forward with the marriage. "Recently, Alex's character has been called into question, and that didn't sit well with Jennifer, and the two have always respected each other."

Page Six's (open in new tab) source was more blunt: "The Madison LeCroy scandal was the the reason for their eventual breakup. There were already problems, but Jennifer was really confused." LeCroy, the Southern Charm reality star, suggested that she and Rodriguez may have discussed the matter in DMs in February.

A source told "Entertainment Tonight" (opens in new tab) at the time that LeCroy dismissed the rumor and said J.Lo didn't care." (They) are romantically connected as a couple and as a family with their children, and rumors like this will not destroy that. Jennifer doesn't mind or care about the Alex and Madison rumors, "I don't think it's a big deal. She thinks it's just outside noise and she trusts Alex. She loves him very much."

In private, that wasn't really the case; People (opens in new tab) has learned from sources that Lopez and Rodriguez knew things had been over for a while. The only reason they delayed their separation was to work together.

"This has been in the works for a long time. 'They are bound together in the business world, so they cannot easily part ways. They have taken the time to even think about untying it all"

.

Lopez hinted at this in an interview with ELLE (open in new tab) in January. She spoke twice about postponing the wedding, but did not concede on whether it would eventually happen.

"We postponed the wedding twice," she said. "We were planning something we really, really wanted to do, but I don't know if we can make [it] happen again. We canceled the wedding and since then we haven't talked about it. There is no need to rush. We want to do it right when we can. We just have to wait and see where the world lands."

Neither Lopez nor Rodriguez have yet to comment on their breakup.
