Queen Elizabeth's new dog's name reportedly has special meaning

Besides the obvious (the crown, the country, her historic reign), there are a few unforgettable things associated with Queen Elizabeth II: her vibrant monochrome outfits, her love of horses, and of course, her dogs. (Open in new tab) Her Majesty has been a lifelong canine lover, and corgis have long held a special place in her heart. (The last corgi in Susan's line, Willow, unfortunately passed away in 2018 (opens in new tab)).

Many fans may associate her with a veritable pack of energetic little creatures, but since her dachshund/corgi mix, Vulcan, passed away in 2020 (opens in new tab), she has actually become one remaining dog named Candy. At least, she was.

Earlier this month, while Prince Philip was hospitalized (open in new tab) for heart surgery, news broke that the Queen had acquired two new four-legged members of the royal family, in the form of a then-unnamed corgi puppy. According to The Sun (opens in new tab), both animals have special significance to the Queen.

The first puppy, Fergus (a dachshund/corgi mix, also known as Dolgy), was named after the Queen's uncle, Fergus Bowes-Lyon, who was killed in action during World War I.

The second, Fergus (a dachshund/corgi mix, also known as Dolgy), was named after the Queen's uncle, Fergus Bowes-Lyon, who was killed in action during World War I.

The puppies have yet to be seen in public, but royal watchers will be watching with bated breath for the first appearance of this obviously beloved new royal pet.
