Award-winning actress Jessica Walter, who rose to fame after her historic run on the series "Arrested Development," died in her sleep Wednesday night, her family announced Thursday (opens in new tab). she was 80.

Walter played Lucille Bruce on Fox's hit sitcom, which ran for three seasons from 2003 to 2006. Netflix picked up the series for two final seasons that aired in 2013 and 2018. The character, the outrageously monstrous and unorthodox patriarch of a wealthy family in legal and financial trouble, spawned many online memes thanks to Walter's comical line delivery and uncaring storytelling style.

The actress, whose career spans six decades, was the star of the show in Clint Eastwood's directorial debut, Play Misty for Me. She also received Emmy nominations for her roles in Trapper John M.D. and Streets of San Francisco, and won an Emmy for her starring role in the police drama Amy Prentiss, which aired in the mid-1970s. Walter also voiced Mallory Archer, another pretentious wealthy woman who runs a dysfunctional spy agency, in the hit FX animated sitcom Archer.

In a statement to Deadline (opens in new tab), Brooke Bowman, Walter's daughter, said: "We confirm the passing of our beloved mother Jessica and extend our deepest condolences... An active actor for over 60 years, her greatest joy was on and off screen, was bringing joy to others through storytelling. Her legacy will live on through her work, but her wit, grace, and overall joie de vivre will be remembered by many."

Celebrities and fans took to social media to pay tribute to Walter, with many sharing their memories of the late actress:
