Jamie Chung Makes Powerful Statement on SAG Awards Red Carpet

On the virtual red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Lovecraft Country star Jamie Chung not only stunned in Oscar de la Renta's off-the-shoulder fire-engine red gown, but also paired it with a "Stop Asian Hate" (opens in new tab) (opens in new tab), but also paired it with an Edie Parker handbag embroidered with the phrase "Stop Asian Hate" (opens in new tab). Celebrities are well aware that their outfits on a big stage like the SAGs will be seen from all over the United States, and Chong's deliberate choice to highlight the frightening rise in hate crimes (opens in new tab) against Asian Americans was a powerful one.

Chung updated her Instagram on Sunday, sharing details about the dress and the pride she feels in her Korean heritage. The actress, who is nominated for a SAG Award tonight, makes no mention of the crimson handbag in her statement, ostensibly speaking to the message. In Asian cultures, red symbolizes joy, luck, and happiness. In Korean culture, red symbolizes creativity, passion, and power. I am very proud of my history and tradition," the actress wrote.

She concluded her note by thanking the cast and stylists of Lovecraft Country. 'I am so grateful to be a part of LOVECRAFT! Thank you Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia for letting me wear this gorgeous @oscardelarenta dress at @sagawards! Sending virtual hugs to my beautiful and soulful cast mates @lovecrafthbo! Can't wait to see you all again."

Chung's SAG Awards red carpet appearance was not the first time she has spoken out about the alarming rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. Last month, a white man visited three Atlanta-area massage parlors and killed eight people, six of them Asian women. In the wake of this racist attack, the actress shared her horror at the events that unfolded on the night of March 16, saying, "We were targeted, hunted down, and eight people were killed. We do not feel safe. #StopAsianHate."

In the caption of his post, Chong conveyed his condolences to the victims and their families, but also held unnamed politicians responsible for their role in fueling racist and xenophobic perceptions of the AAPI community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. These murders and countless acts of violence, the destruction of businesses in our community and white terrorism are a direct result of politicians and leaders fanning the flames of anti-Asian rhetoric and using us as scapegoats for a global pandemic."

The actress also stresses that anti-Asian sentiment in the United States is nothing new. She said, "Historically, Asian immigrants have been the scapegoats for other people's misfortunes. This is over. It starts with telling it like it is. It is a domestic white terror hate crime against Asians. #StopAsianHate.
