Nichelle Turner, What Would You Wear to Host "Entertainment Tonight"?

Nichelle Turner is reporting history, but she's also making history. Last month, Turner was named the new co-host of Entertainment Tonight (ET) along with Kevin Frazier. Turner, 46, is the first black female host in ET's 40-year history. It is also the first time the show has been composed entirely of people of color.

No one could be more qualified for the job. Turner has been with the show for seven years (both as a correspondent and as a weekend co-host) and has won four Daytime Emmy Awards during her tenure. Over the years, she has built a loyal celebrity following, many of whom she interviews regularly, including Oprah, Gayle King, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

This promotion has been long overdue. When former host Nancy O'Dell left the show in August 2019, Turner knew she wanted the role. Despite the obvious choice, she wasn't sure she would be chosen." I don't have any qualms about it: it was just that I felt I was the best person for the job," she says. But sometimes you just don't know how things are going to turn out, how things are going to turn out at the end of the day." She watched as others came in for interviews and screen tests for the role, but were not hired. Instead of worrying about the position, she decided to focus on being her best self. [I'm going to be honest. I honestly wondered if America was ready to see two black hosts on the nightly entertainment shows," she recalls. Honestly, the answer I got back was, 'You're an idiot. A lot of people said to me, 'I already thought you were the emcee.' To me, it was an affirmation that America is ready for you, sister."

When she received word from her boss, executive producer Erin Johnson, that she had been chosen, she was overwhelmed with excitement, joy, and gratitude; the wave of support from ET and those who had seen her on screen for years surprised her. It was a real whirlwind," she said. At first it was hard to comprehend it all. I'd get a little emotional just thinking about it. I received so much genuine love, support, and encouragement," she says.

It may be a new role, but Turner's classic, clean, tailored, on-camera style (brightened by bold color choices) is constant. Her on-screen style, she says, reflects her personal, day-to-day style.

We interviewed Turner for several weeks in her new role to learn what she wears on and off camera to feel like her best self.

I'm not very good at meditating because my brain is constantly moving at 50 miles per hour, but I try to do it consciously and intentionally every morning when I wake up, and I try to sit for five or 10 minutes and just be silent, and I try to be very conscious of what I'm doing and what I'm doing and what I'm doing. I don't check my phone. I don't move. I close my eyes and just breathe in the silence. Then I get up and start my day, rocking my body.

I'm a bit of a gym rat and try to exercise before work. During the shutdown, like many others, I was finding ways other than going to the gym to stay fit. For the past few months, I've been working out on my spin bike before work. I call it the "eloton". I bought a cheaper bike and use the Peloton app.

Then I head to the studio. Now I go a little earlier and attend the editorial meetings to get a better idea of the show and how the day is going. I like to be part of the creative process. Next I go to hair and makeup, and I'm not going to lie, our team is great, but I'm a tomboy, so this is my least favorite time of the day. After that I read scripts and prepare for the show. Sometimes I do a couple of pre-recorded segments.

Sometimes I do six costume changes in one day. But first the sweats: I go to work in sweats every day. If I come in a denim jumpsuit or something, the hair and makeup lady says, "Whoa. What are you dressed up for?" And I'm like.

I have a favorite dress for self-portraits. I love the wide pants, and I think that cut is always really flattering on 99 percent of women. And the silhouette is beautiful. I also love monotone looks. You can never go wrong with all black, all white, or all green, and I've grown to love yellow, which I never liked before. Lastly, I love menswear. I love the androgynous look. I think it suits me very well.

If I'm going to wear designer, I like Theory, Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang. But lately I've been into Zimmermann. It's more girly than what I usually wear. I have three or four Zimmerman dresses right now, and I love them.

I'm a tomboy, but I also love cute shoes. Whether it's Steve Madden or Christian Louboutin. So the shoe game is always tough. Always. In life, I'm a flat shoes and sneakers (Nike Air Max. On set, I'm much more of a heel guy. I have two pairs [for the show shoot]: a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti army green shoes with snakeskin soles and green ribbons on the toes. People go crazy when I wear these shoes. Even if I'm wearing jeans, I wear those shoes. They are hot shoes. These shoes were on sale and more than half off. I also have a pair of beige Christian Louboutins. I have worn them out. They go with everything.

I am pear shaped. I have hips for days, but nothing on top. That's why A-line cut skirts always work for me. The hem length is what we call after-five in the country, and it hits right below the knee. I have slightly thicker legs so it's a very flattering silhouette. I also love anything that emphasizes the waist. Because one of my strong points is that I have a very small waist.

Ruches generally don't work for me. I am also not a girl who likes things that are bejeweled or decorated with lots of stuff. I don't look good in those things. Besides, I'd be too thrilled if I never had to wear cold shoulders again.

I rarely carry a purse. I always carry a backpack. I actually just bought a Coach leather backpack for men.

I'm an earring girl now. My friend Simone Smith (LL Cool J's wife) has a great jewelry line. When I wear Simone's jewelry, I feel like I'm shooting a video for LL. When I wear the little hoops, it looks like I actually did it.

I love the really nicely cut two-piece suit. I love it. It's my favorite.

Nice sweatshirt, to be honest. I recently found a really nice cashmere luxury sweatshirt at Banana Republic. But my favorite is this big T-shirt I stole from my three boyfriends. It's tattered and worn, but I love it so much when I wear it. It's so lived in and fabulous. I never want to see that guy again, but that T-shirt isn't going anywhere.

I've always fought against what society thinks of women's style. My mother always said, 'Oh my, you have to make an effort. When I was in junior high and high school, I wore boxer shorts and a long T, and I was fine with that. I liked to go against the grain. I think personal style is an extension of a person. I think people can look at my style and understand, oh, he's easy. Simple and clean. To me, it reflects who I want to be in life. But there's also a lot of structure in my style, and that's what makes me who I am. I like to be organized. I like having a schedule and structure, and that's reflected in my style.

Just as you learn more about yourself as you go through life, you learn more about your personal style. My love for clothes has deepened in ways I never thought possible. I've always had a desire to make a good purchase, and that's not going to change. But in this job and in this industry, I have also learned to appreciate it. Maybe I had an Anne Hathaway or Devil Wears Prada moment when I realized what good style could do for me and how spending $10 on a tailor could change my life.

My mother told me that a little goes a long way. I hate to say it, but my mother was right. Except that she made me wear fuchsia lipstick.
