Prince William Apparently Wanted Kate Middleton to Call Him "Princess Catherine"
We all know that Prince William and Miss Kate Middleton are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (open in new tab).
A Telegraph (open in new tab) article dating back to the time of the Cambridges' (open in new tab) engagement has been resurfacing all over the place lately, and it had some pretty juicy things to say about the couple's potential title.
First, Prince William (open in new tab) apparently wanted to keep the name, and therefore wanted his wife's title to be the same as his own: "He wants Kate to become Princess Catherine," a royal courtier told the newspaper at the time.
However, according to royal regulations, if Prince William (open in new tab) did not become a duke, Middleton (open in new tab) had to assume the title of "Princess William" because she was not born a princess. Her being called "Princess Catherine" would have caused a ripple effect in various branches of the royal family.
"Kate is a commoner and cannot be called 'Queen Catherine,'" royal historian Kenneth Rose told The Telegraph. 'But it is up to the queen to decide what title to give her, with one or two exceptions. [When Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester died, the Queen gave the Duchess of Gloucester the title of Princess Alice. This was a reward for many years of faithful service, though."
The title was also given to the Duchess of Gloucester.
Rose, however, imagined that if Middleton were to assume the title that Prince William (open in new tab) had originally wanted for her, there would be protests among the royal family. 'If that were to happen, I have no doubt that Princess Michael of Kent, for example, would offer to become Princess Marie-Christine. You have to think that there will be some pressure on him [William] not to change the institution."
But there is more: the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge that was eventually given to the two could have been given to someone else entirely. In fact, that dukedom was originally reserved for Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and the Queen's youngest son. Prince Edward was to be the Duke of Cambridge, but then he saw the movie "Shakespeare in Love" and the character of the Earl of Wessex came up. He liked the sound of it and asked the Queen (opens in new tab) if he could use that name instead." (Laughter.) Prince Edward seems to be the kind of guy who exclaims, "Oh my gosh, I'm such a Samantha," and I absolutely love that narrative voice of his.
