The Sussexes visited New York this month, albeit briefly; Prince Harry celebrated Veterans Day by handing out medals aboard the battleship Intrepid; and Meghan Markle stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres show to talk about motherhood and hint at who in the royal family she has been in touch with. But unlike their last trip to New York (where they attended an event on climate change action and then flew back to California by private jet), the Duke and Duchess did something surprising this time: they did something surprising this time.

The royal family has previously come under fire for its seemingly hypocritical stance on climate change. They seemed to pair their vocal concern about man-made environmental degradation with their habit of repeatedly using private jets. As we reported after Harry was spotted flying his private jet to and from polo matches, the use of private jets is notoriously bad for the environment. In a way, it is understandable that such a well-known couple would want privacy while traveling, but it is hard to accept given that they have been outspoken climate change activists.

It also makes sense to start using commercial aircraft now: just this month, Prince Harry and Meghan's foundation, Archelwell, announced plans to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations to net zero by 2030. We have wondered aloud since that time how they intended to count their flying habits among the green business activities they had pledged.

Therefore, this is a big step in the right direction and shows that Prince Harry and Princess Meghan are serious about holding themselves accountable when it comes to their activities! Let's hope that this trend will then spread to other famous couples.
