New book claims it was Prince Charles who asked about baby Archie's skin tone
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah earlier this year to talk about their lives since leaving their royal jobs, one of the biggest bombshells they mentioned was that an unnamed member of the royal family directed racist comments at them. In particular, one royal member asked about the skin color of Harry and Meghan's future children.
It is speculated that Prince Harry may reveal this in his forthcoming memoir, but while they refused to name names at the time, the new book quotes sources as saying that it was Prince Charles who asked the offensive question.
According to Page Six, journalist Christopher Andersen's new book, "Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan." Inside the Private Lives of Meghan" (available Tuesday) (opens in a new tab), says "a well-placed source" in the royal family has set the scene for how Prince Charles posed the question, which indirectly led to Meghan and Harry's departure for the United States.
Here's how the book claims: on the morning of November 17, 2017, when Harry and Meghan announced their engagement, Prince Charles and Camilla were discussing them when Prince Charles asked, "What will the children look like?" He reportedly asked. According to the book, the source said that Camilla seemed "somewhat surprised" when he replied, "Well, I bet they are absolutely gorgeous." Then Prince Charles "lowered his voice" and explained, according to Page Six: "I mean, how do you think the kids look?"
Prince Charles, through a spokesman, outright denied the book's portrayal of the reported events, saying it was "fiction and not worth further comment." And royal watchers will no doubt see red flags as they read this account: mainly, what kind of source would be so close enough to hear Prince Charles lower his voice to speak to his wife, yet publicize such incendiary information? Second, Prince Harry claims that in an interview with Oprah, a royal asked him privately about the skin color of his future child.
However, Prince Harry clarified after the Oprah interview that it was neither the Queen nor Prince Philip who asked him. Furthermore, Omid Scobie, co-author of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's book Finding Freedom (which the couple recently revealed they collaborated on), stated that there were indeed numerous conversations that were severely racist, to varying degrees, which greatly affected the couple. Therefore, if the events of the book are confirmed, it is possible that this is only one of the conversations in question.
Again, this is all unconfirmed. However, Prince Harry's supposedly explosive memoir, to be published next year, may shed more direct light on this scandal.
