Kate Middleton Not Trying to Outshine Camilla Parker Bowles, Royal Expert

After the release of Kate Middleton's official portrait to mark her 40th birthday, royal fans were struck by how queenly she looks. And we get it. Nothing says "I am an extraordinary princess" like a fluffy white gown and long, wavy hair. It's probably no coincidence that the black-and-white photos make Queen Victoria look like a yutz.

But royal experts say we should all hold our horses. This is because, despite the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge appears to be on the verge of becoming the official queen, she knows better than to try to outwit Camilla Parker Bowles, who is actually the most likely to become the next queen. The rules of hierarchy in the royal family are not mere social norms or suggestions. If they are not written in stone, they are certainly written in very old and important books.

Royal expert Ingrid Sward told Britain's Mirror newspaper that Kate Middleton is more embarrassed by the implication that she is trying to outdo Camilla than pleased by the attention.

"Prince Charles is not even king yet, and the royal family is very careful not to outdo each other. Kate wouldn't want to outbid Camilla either," Sward said. But she is a wonderful advertisement for the monarchy, especially worldwide, and people will see her as the perfect queen."

It is especially important that Kate not try to jump over the queen's throne when it is not even certain that Camilla will officially be titled Queen Consort. Prince Charles is fighting hard for his wife to receive the honor, but public opinion is taking it hard: according to Newsweek, a YouGov poll of Britons found that only 13% of the public wanted Camilla to be called queen.

In any case, Kate will have to wait a bit until it's her turn.
