For behavioral expert Darren Stanton, this is certainly true when it comes to the Royal Family.
Interviewed by Marie Claire on behalf of Coffee (opens in new tab) Friend (opens in new tab), Stanton took a deep dive into the food preferences expressed by various British royals in the past. Incidentally, he also previously analyzed their drink orders, for those interested.
The Windsors tend to be quite reserved about what they eat and have to follow a bunch of strange food rules, but still had enough material for an expert. Here are his comments.
The Duchess eats: porridge, curries, homemade family recipes, raw food, matcha smoothies, and plant-based lunches with vegetables and legumes
Unlike older members of the Royal Family, the Duchess of Cambridge is not opposed to a little food fad. Stanton explains, "Kate's tastes are much more in line with what most people eat these days, and she likes to try new food trends such as raw food diets, plant-based meals, and even matcha in her coffee and green smoothies."
"But her diet also includes many of the nation's old favorites, like curry and sticky toffee pudding. Kate's food preferences may suggest why she is arguably one of the most popular royal family members: she knows what the public likes, she empathizes with the public, and the public empathizes with her."

The Duke of Cambridge, like many fathers before him, is often seen using a grill. 'William, on the other hand, also likes to barbecue,' Stanton says. 'Having a family barbecue means you like to take charge and you're not afraid to make all the decisions.'

Like his drink order (green juice), the Duke of Sussex's new diet is all about healthy living in California. Says Stanton, "In recent years, Harry has reportedly embraced the California lifestyle, giving up junk food like pizza, eating lots of fruit, and drinking green smoothies."
Still, the Sussexes certainly haven't banned carbs. Says Stanton, "Meanwhile, Meghan indulges in pasta and plenty of parmesan cheese, especially the homemade dishes she makes herself in the kitchen, recipes for which I've blogged about before."
"Meghan seems to be quite adventurous and shows it in the time she spends in the kitchen. She is passionate about cooking and experimenting with different dishes, showing that she is open to new opportunities and change.
"Like many Californians, Megan is concerned about what she eats and wants to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and is said to eat both vegan and gluten-free meals during the week. This ability to relax typical habits demonstrates her ability to be disciplined yet flexible and have fun.
"This mindset is similar to Meghan's character in that she is serious and at the same time not afraid to let her hair down.
"The change in Harry's eating habits may indicate that Princess Meghan is influencing Harry to be more adventurous in their relationship. However, despite his move to the U.S., Harry still seeks a more traditional atmosphere and is said to love Sunday roasts and often cooks roast chicken with Princess Meghan. This typically British dish not only reflects his connection to his homeland, which he still holds dear, but also suggests that he is nostalgic for parts of his life in England, as well as Harry's pursuit of feelings of nostalgia."

. [Just as we look at pictures or listen to music, certain foods can evoke memories, keep the past alive, and trigger nostalgia. Many of the foods we eat have a psychological component. It is said that queens like to eat dark chocolate, perhaps due to the shortage of chocolate during the war when food was rationed.
"The queen is not fond of garlic, and it is also said that most royals avoid eating garlic before public appearances. When interacting with other leaders and important people, it is common etiquette to avoid garlic and spices on the breath, indicating that the queen is considerate of others and willing to uphold the highest standards."
That's right.

While the Prince is a British traditionalist, the Duchess prefers a touch of adventure on her plate. 'Prince Charles has a very simple palate, enjoying eggs for breakfast, whereas Camilla prefers spicy dishes, especially garlic. Their different food preferences may reflect their different personalities and how one complements the other."
"Charles is more regimented, whereas Camilla is not afraid to take risks, but that does not stop them from having fun and genuinely enjoying each other. These differences seem to make their marriage work."
