Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Honored for Their Contributions to Social Justice at NAACP Image Awards

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have embarked on a number of ventures since completing their roles as senior royals.

And now, as they prepare to receive the Presidential Award at the 53rd annual NAACP Image Awards on February 26, their social justice work is receiving significant recognition. The Sussexes also established the NAACP-Archelwell Digital Civil Rights Award, which honors leaders who use technology to advance social justice, the recipient of which has yet to be announced.

The awards will be held over several days, and many winners have already been chosen, including Saweetie for Best New Artist, Jazmine Sullivan for Best Female Artist, and Anthony Hamilton for Best Male Artist.

"We are thrilled to present this award to Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have listened to the call for social justice and joined together in the fight for equity in the United States and around the world," said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson in a statement (from ABC News) . [Not only do they continue to lead by example, but the Duke and Duchess have chosen to inspire the next generation of activists through the NAACP-Archelwell Digital Civil Rights Award," the statement continued.

The Presidential Award has been awarded to such big names as LeBron James, Rihanna, Jay-Z, and John Legend. Ella Fitzgerald first received the award in 1987.

In response, Sussex said, "It is truly an honor to be recognized by President Derrick Johnson and the NAACP. We are proud to support the work of the NAACP and to partner with them on the newly created NAACP-Archerwell Digital Civil Rights Award."

The NAACP is also proud to be a recipient of the NAACP's first ever Digital Civil Rights Award.

The royal couple has advocated for (and donated to) diverse causes, including vaccine equality, women's education, and safety from domestic violence. Much of their philanthropy is done through their own foundation, Archewell.
