Meghan and Harry choose black designer as honoree

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and Meghan's mother Doria were out last night to attend the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles. (The duo's nonprofit organization, Archewell, supports racial justice, the "Black Lives" movement, and the fight for vaccine equity for all)

. [Meghan wore a custom blue one-shoulder silk dress (with train!) by Christopher John Rogers ), but according to What Meghan Wore, this was "most likely custom-made, as she could not find the dress in his collection" (Rogers also designed the purple coat). (Rogers also designed the purple coat and dress worn by Vice President Kamala Harris for her inauguration in January 2021.) On her feet are gold Celeste glitter sandals by Meghan's favorite brand, Aquazzura. Her bracelets also had meaning: she wore a gold and blue stone bracelet that belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, and a Cartier love bracelet that she often wore.

Meanwhile, Harry's custom-made tuxedo was also by London-based black designer Oswald Boateng.

As Meghan took the stage, she and Harry said, "It's very sobering to be in the company of so many illustrious awardees." Harry then thanked the people of Ukraine and said, "I am filled with immense gratitude tonight, both for this award and for this community that has welcomed me so warmly. I come from a very different background than my wonderful wife, but our lives came together for a reason."

He added, "We share a commitment to a life of service, a responsibility to fight injustice, and a belief that the most often overlooked people are the most important ones to listen to."

Megan continued, "I could not be more proud that we are doing this work together. Shortly before George Floyd was murdered, we moved to California, my hometown. For Black America, that 9 minutes and 29 seconds transcended time and evoked our unhealed wounds for centuries. In the months that followed, my wife and I spoke with the civil rights community and promised ourselves and our organization, Archewell, that we would shine a light on those who were advancing racial justice and progress."

She concluded, "My mother is here with us tonight. Thank you."

Past recipients of the Presidential Award include Condoleezza Rice, LeBron James, Rihanna, Muhammed Ali, and Jesse Jackson.
