How Attendees of the State of the Union Address Expressed Support for Ukraine
In President Joe Biden's first State of the Union address, the Russian aggression taking place in Ukraine was given top priority. Biden opened his speech by condemning this outrage and pledged to support Ukraine by imposing sanctions against Russia and supporting NATO's efforts to restore peace in the region. U.S. support for Ukraine was expressed in many other ways as well.
Dozens of attendees wore Ukrainian flag badges and stickers, some with the words "I Stand With Ukraine." But delegates, ministers, and many others made many other creative displays of support. These included everything from scarves to blazers to brooches.
Those who watched the State of the Union address would have undoubtedly noticed that those in attendance were dressed in blue and yellow in honor of the Ukrainian flag. Congresswoman Victoria Spartz's (R-Ind.) golden dress and deep blue blazer were typical, as were the ensembles of Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (R-Mich.), Congresswoman Terri Sewell (R-Ariz.), and Congresswoman Lisa Brandt Rochester (R-Del.). all incorporated the color in unique ways.
"Did you know that Ukraine's national flower is the sunflower?" said Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-N.Y.), who elegantly showed her support by wearing a striking sunflower brooch on her bipartisan purple suit. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, also attended SOTU wearing a sunflower pin on her lapel. And First Lady Jill Biden wore a rich blue dress by Sally LaPointe with sunflowers embroidered on the sleeves. The First Lady often sends a message with her attire. On Monday, she wore a minimalist white face mask with sunflower detailing on the side at a Black History Month event.
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (R-NY) stood out in a traditional Ukrainian dress called a vysivanka, with striking embroidery and a soft red cape.
Some of the homages to Ukraine were more subtle. For example, U.S. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) pocket chief in Ukrainian colors was a small but poignant gesture that did not go unnoticed.
