Prince William used a pseudonym to protect his identity during college.

Prince William had a wonderful university life at the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. And a normal college life is what William wanted, so he came up with a fake nickname for his friends to use when talking about him to avoid attracting the attention of the future king: Steve

Yes. Steve. Steve.

According to the Mirror, William used this pseudonym to escape the prying eyes of the press, at least for a while, and struggled to be a normal college student. Although he enrolled under the name William Wales (the surname chosen because his father was (and is) the Prince of Wales), when speaking about him in public, his friends (including Kate) would make sure that they were actually talking about the heir to the throne To make sure that no one knew that they were talking about the heir to the throne, he was referred to as Steve by all but those in his close inner circle. While the press agreed that William should have the freedom to focus on his studies without the relentless media attention, he was still Prince William, and no matter where he went or what he did, he attracted attention.

"It is believed that his classmates used the nickname to avoid drawing unwanted attention to him," the Mirror reported.

In college, William initially majored in art history but later switched to geography. He and Kate lived in the same dormitory at college and became "instant buddies," according to a friend of the couple, after William got up the courage to invite her to breakfast with him and his friends. (Incidentally, Kate had a nickname in college: according to royal expert Katie Nicole, the nickname "Beautiful Kate" was given to her at the end of Fresher's Week in her first year at the school.)

The couple's friends say that Kate's nickname was "Beautiful Kate.

When William and Kate were still friends, William paid £220 for front row tickets to see Kate walk in a charity fashion show; in second year, William (or should I say Steve), Kate, and two other friends moved into a quaint In second grade, William (or should I say Steve), Kate, and two other friends moved into a quaint two-story house, where William and Kate eventually fell in love.

They graduated from college in 2005, and their graduation ceremony was attended by the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and the Duchess of Cornwall.
