Queen was 'deeply upset' by children's divorce, royal writer says

The queen is the picture of strength, but that doesn't mean she is without upsetting events in her life. Apparently, one particular aspect of the children's lives upset the queen a bit.

"The queen remained outwardly stoic, but was deeply upset by talk of divorce," wrote Robert Hardman in his forthcoming book, Queen of Our Times: The Life of Queen Elizabeth II ( opens in new tab) (excerpt by People). Another former Imperial Household official recalled occasional glimpses of the queen's despair."

The official said to Hardman: 'I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. I said, 'Ma'am, this seems to be happening everywhere. This is almost common. But she was so sad and frustrated that she just said, 'Three out of four!' ' I just said, 'I'm sorry,'" she said. We should not underestimate the pain she went through."

As you know, Prince Charles married Princess Diana in 1981; they had two children (William and Harry) and were divorced in 1996 after an unhappy marriage. Prince Charles married his longtime girlfriend Camilla Parker-Bowles in 2005.

Princess Anne married Mark Phillips in 1973. They had two children, Zara and Peter, but divorced in 1992. The Princess married Timothy Lawrence the same year.

Prince Andrew married Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson in 1986. They had two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, but divorced in 1996. Andrew never remarried.

Thankfully for the Queen, her last child, Prince Edward, is still happily married to Sophie, Countess of Wessex, whom he married in 1999. They have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and Viscount James Severn.
