Will Smith punches Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars

In one of the most shocking moments in recent awards ceremony history, Will Smith took the stage at the Academy Awards and punched comedian and presenter Chris Rock. Pinkett Smith has been open about his battle with alopecia. Shortly after, Jada's husband, Will Smith, approached Rock and punched him. Smith yelled, "Keep my wife's name out of your mouth."

Here is the full clip:

Chris Rock responded, "Oh, wow," and the footage was cut for American viewers.

Soon "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" was trending on Twitter, and some viewers suspected the act was a skit. Distribution was quickly restored, and Questlove won the award for Best Documentary Feature and gave an emotional speech, but the Smith and Rock moment was all anyone was talking about. (Questlove, when asked about the moment in the Academy Awards press room, said, "We're not talking about that. This is about the Harlem Cultural Festival.")

The next presenter was Didi, who addressed the incident by saying: "Will and Chris, we're going to work this out as a family. Let's move forward with love now. Let's all make some noise."

During a commercial break, Denzel Washington came to speak to both Smith and Rock:

A few minutes later, Will won Best Actor for "King Richard" and addressed the case in a monologue. 'I'm called upon in my life to love people, to protect people, to be a river of people,' he said. 'To do what we're doing now, you have to be able to take abuse. In this job, you have to be able to smile and pretend to be okay with people who despise you. ...... A few minutes ago, Denzel [Washington] said to me: 'At your best moments, the devil comes to you, so watch out'"

.

He continued: "I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena and the whole Williams family. I also want to apologize to the Academy and to my fellow nominees ....... Art imitates life: ...... As was said about Richard Williams, I look like a crazy father. Love will make you do crazy things."

In a statement Monday, the Academy said: "The Academy condemns Mr. Smith's actions at last night's show. We have initiated a formal review of this incident and will consider further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct, and California law."

The Academy also stated that it "condemns Mr. Smith's actions.

Pinkett Smith went public in 2018 with her diagnosis of alopecia, an autoimmune disease; in December, she posted a video about her experience: "Now, at this point, I can only laugh," she said, showing viewers a bald patch along the center of her scalp." You all know that I struggle with alopecia, but one day, look at these lines. Look.

Pinkett Smith previously revealed the condition on Red Table Talk. One day I was in the shower and I had my hair in my hand and I thought, oh my God, am I going to go bald?"

He also said, "I was in the shower one day and I had my hair in my hand and I thought, oh my God, am I going bald?
