Read MoreThe Oscars were tumultuous.
While the world debated and heated up about Will Smith and Chris Rock's slap, we got to hear Liam Payne's take on Sunday's events.
"Who? I can hear you say, "Who? I'm sure you'll hear him say, "I'm not sure. All of us can't be enthusiastic dilettantes like me. Liam Payne is one-fifth (and later one-fourth) of the boy band One Direction, and people are a little surprised that he was invited to the Academy Awards in the first place. I mean, I'm not surprised that anyone even slightly famous was invited to the Oscars, but I have to admit that Rachel Zegler really should have accepted Payne's invitation.
Anyway, the point is that he was there and told "Good Morning Britain" exactly how he felt about the "Men in Black" actor slapping the comedian for 2 minutes and 27 seconds. And the show's co-anchor, Richard Madery, said he was "not sure" who Payne was.
And the Wolverhampton-born singer from the West Midlands, England, spoke in a totally out-of-place accent throughout. Was it... Dutch? American? Irish? South African?" I'm... I'm in pain over this whole situation.
I'll spare you the full text, but here are a few gems from the video:
Let the kind folks on Twitter comment on my behalf.
"Trying to identify Liam Payne's new accent," one user wrote, along with a clip from the song "Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)" by The Beautiful South. The lyrics read, "This is Rotterdam or anywhere, Liverpool or Rome ... "
"I really enjoy this video. Weird American/Irish/Dutch accents; two minutes of pure wired-guy talk; the energy to talk about what it means to live in a smoking-hall. The lack of explanation as to why he asked Liam Payne the question in the first place? I was surprised," wrote journalist Cerys Turner.
"The quiet best piece of content surrounding the Will Smith case so far: Liam Payne, who, like an LA wellness influencer, speaks in a hybrid accent of utterly baffling origin about "one of the world's greatest emoters" and even managed to add that he sold out Madison Square Garden," contributed writer Kieran Varley.
"Damn Will Smith slapped Chris Rock so hard that he changed Liam Payne's accent," someone else said.
"I cried over his accent. It's like an Irishman who spent most of his life in America pretending to be Liam Payne," journalist Andrew Gentry tweeted.
"In a way, we are all Liam Payne, doing funny accents to distract from the fact that we are at a party to which we should not have been invited," said writer Olivia Foster.
And finally, "I think we should ask Liam Payne from now on to give his thoughts on everything, in every accent but his own."
Today is one of those days when I really love the Internet.
As for accents, it's common for people to start speaking differently after spending a lot of time in other countries. Harry Styles did it, Prince Harry did it. So did I.
