Why Prince Harry did not attend Prince Philip's memorial service

On Tuesday, the royal family and hundreds of mourners gathered for a memorial service for the Queen's beloved husband, Prince Philip, who died last April at the age of 99. Absent from the funeral were Philip's grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex. The Duke and Duchess are involved in a legal battle over security during their visit to the UK, and Prince Harry has stated that he "cannot return home" until that is resolved.

The Home Office, a branch of the British government, had previously ruled that Prince Harry and his family could not pay for their own security during their stay in the U.K.

In a statement in January, Prince Harry's team said: "Prince Harry's role in the Royal Family has changed, but his royal Prince Harry's profile as a member of the Royal Family has not changed. There are no threats to Prince Harry or his family. He further explained that in the U.S., Harry and his family can pay for their own security, but in the U.K., they cannot do so because of a ruling by the Home Office. 'That security cannot replicate the police protection they need while in the UK. In the absence of such protection, Prince Harry and his family will not be able to return home."

Such risks are not theoretical: according to a statement in January, Prince Harry was compromised by a security breach the last time he was in the UK to attend the unveiling of a statue dedicated to his late mother, Princess Diana: "While leaving the charity event, police protection . his security was compromised because there was no police protection"

.

If the security issue is resolved in a timely manner, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and potentially their two young children, Archie and Lilibet, could return to England this summer to meet their families for the Queen's Jubilee, an unprecedented event to mark 70 years on the throne. There is a possibility that they could return.
