Read MoreMuch has been said about Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock at Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony, and we will likely be hearing about the incident from various angles for some time yet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hosts the Academy Awards, has announced the initiation of "disciplinary proceedings" against Smith.
In a statement, the Academy explained that the King Richard actor violated its code of conduct, which "includes inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and conduct that compromises the integrity of the Academy." Their procedures will determine how Smith will be reprimanded.
"Things unfolded in a way we did not anticipate. While we wish to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused to do so, we also recognize that the situation could have been handled differently."
Deliberations began at the March 30 Board meeting. One anonymous board member told THR, "I think we all feel unanimously that what he did was out of hand. People want real results. All members of all chapters have contacted all governors. This is an assault, not only a physical assault, but an assault on the community."
The Academy sent a letter to its members on Tuesday condemning Smith's actions, and The Reporter published the letter in full:
"Sunday's telecast of the 94th Academy Awards was a celebration of our community's incredible work over the past year. It was a celebration of many individuals. We are upset and outraged that such moments were overshadowed by unacceptable and harmful on-stage behavior by the nominees.
"To be clear, we condemn Mr. Smith's actions that occurred on Sunday night."
"As stated in our bylaws, the Academy's board will determine the appropriate disciplinary action against Mr. Smith.
Smith apologized for his actions against Locke, who responded to a bad joke referring to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia.
