Prince William and Kate Middleton 'overcome with regret' after Caribbean tour: sources

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's Caribbean tour, which took them to Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas, was a tense and controversial trip.

In each country, they faced protests denouncing the historical links between the royal family and slavery and colonization. In addition, the governments of Belize and Jamaica announced their intention to remove the queen as head of state, following Barbados, which removed its monarch late last year.

Upon the royal couple's return to the UK, Prince William made an unprecedented statement on Instagram, effectively seeming to congratulate the Caribbean nation for parting ways with his grandmother (though apparently not in so many words).

Now a source tells Us Weekly that the Duke and Duchess are "overcome with remorse" after the trip, which they were "looking forward to."

"Given the protests, it was certainly more difficult than expected," the source said.

"They obviously know their history, but being there during the protest was a real eye opener."

Back in their home country, the Cambridges are apparently considering ways to "strengthen relations" with other Commonwealth countries. The official adds, "They can't change what happened in the past, so they are focusing on the future."

"It is clear that William and Kate want the former colonies to remain part of the Commonwealth. But (they) will support whatever decision they make, including independence."

Still, the royal family made good memories on the eight-day trip.

"Meeting new and interesting people was a highlight," the source explained. They loved dancing, getting to know the Belizean locals, and trying the local cuisine." Kate loves spicy food, so it was right up her alley."

The Cambridges are doting parents, but it was apparently "refreshing to spend a few days without the kids" without George, Charlotte, and Louis, the source continues. "It's been years since they've spent so much time together without the kids," the source said. Still, "by the end of the trip, (they) wanted to come home early and hug the kids again."
