Read MoreIt is, somewhat unbelievably, almost 11 years since the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011. (In anticipation of this milestone, I'd like to reflect on Kate's Something Old, Something New, Something Reserved, and Something Blue, according to wedding tradition. She may not have a tiara from her new grandmother-in-law or a spare sapphire engagement ring from her late mother-in-law on hand, but at least even those of us who are not marrying a prince may be able to adopt her Something New and Something Blue.
Something Old
Kate had perhaps the ultimate "something old." William famously gave Kate a romantic gift of his late mother Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring, which she wore from their engagement in 1981 until her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996. According to the Daily Express, the ring "features a stunning 12-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 smaller solitaire diamonds," said Lorna Haddon, head of diamond jewelry at Beaverbrooks. The sapphires and diamonds are set in a slim 18k white gold band that highlights the central piece and draws the eye to the stunning stones." The ring had incredible sentimental value to William, Haddon said, explaining that he "felt Princess Diana would be with them on their wedding day if Kate wore her mother's engagement ring."
SOMETHING NEW
While Kate's "Something Old" represented William's mother, her "Something New" represented her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton. The Middletons gave their eldest daughter diamond earrings by Robinson Pelham for her big day.
"She kept her choice of jewelry for the big day very simple. As simple as wearing a royal tiara," Haddon told the Express. She paired that headpiece with a pair of gorgeous pear-cut diamond drop earrings given to her by her parents for the wedding."
SOMETHING BORROWED
For "something borrowed," Kate dug through the Queen's vast jewelry collection and chose Cartier's Halo tiara for the wedding. According to the Royal Collection Trust, the tiara is formed of a band of "739 brilliant diamonds and 149 baton diamonds set in 16 graduated scrolls," according to the Express.
"Kate wore a special halo tiara on her wedding day, borrowed from none other than the queen herself," Haddon said." In royal history, the piece was presented to Her Majesty the Queen by King George VI as an 18th birthday present."
"The Queen's wedding was the first time in the history of the royal family that a tiara had been given to her.
The Carter Halo Tiara is believed to be the first tiara owned by the Queen. It has also been seen worn by Her Majesty's only daughter, Princess Anne, but had not been seen for decades prior to Kate's wedding in 2011.
Something Blue
Of course, the sapphire engagement ring can double count as Kate's "something blue," but Kate's famous Alexander McQueen wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton and subtly stitched with adorned with a blue ribbon, this box is also checked. (Her sister-in-law Meghan Markle wore a rather fantastic "something blue": she wore a blue dress on her first date with Prince Harry in 2016, and apparently sewed fabric from that dress onto her veil when she married him two years later. Adorable)
