Prince Philip's last words to his eldest son, Prince Charles, were what one would expect from the witty patriarch of the British royal family

Except for a touching social media post about the late Prince Philip, the patriarch of the royal family who died a year ago this weekend, April 9, 2021, the royal family has been in personal mourning. Philip died at the age of 99, just two months shy of his 100th birthday on June 10.

One of the strongest characteristics of the Duke of Edinburgh throughout his long life was his wry sense of humor and poignant wit, traits that were on full display in his last words to his eldest son, Prince Charles, just hours before his death.

In a BBC documentary celebrating Philip's life, Prince Charles tentatively brought up plans for his father's 100th birthday, which was coming up in two months, in his last phone call. For Philip, who did not want to be the center of attention, the celebration was not exactly a joyous occasion. Charles suggested a party to celebrate the milestone.

"We're talking about his birthday! Or if there's going to be a reception!" Charles said loudly, knowing that his father was a bit deaf.

Philip's witty banter broke out.

"I told him, 'I knew you'd say that!' '," Charles told the BBC. Charles told the BBC, adding that his father's last words were a happy memory for him.

Philip died peacefully a few hours later at Windsor Castle.
