After Princess Diana's Death, Camilla Parker-Bowles Was "Public Enemy Number One," Says Tina Brown

Camilla Parker-Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall, is now an established member of the royal family, but unfortunately there are still opponents.

Still, this is nothing compared to the backlash she received when tapes of her phone conversations with Prince Charles while married to Princess Diana were released, and when the Crown Princess was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris.

Royal family expert Tina Brown spoke to the Washington Post about the public's treatment of Parker-Bowles after both incidents.

"You can hardly imagine how much abuse Camilla actually suffered," Brown told the magazine (via Express).

"I mean, she was called hag, hag, witch. I mean, these are words that have been used about Camilla for years," Brown said.

"And of course, when the dreaded Camillagate tape was leaked, in a phone call between Charles and Camilla, unfortunately, Charles called her some sort of sanitary napkin. [He jokingly called Camilla "Tampax."]"

A year after the tape leaked, Brown says, Princess Diana died and Camilla became "public enemy number one."

"Camilla was considered, you know, the ugly, I mean, the love that Charles had for her that drove Diana to such pain and sorrow," the expert said.

"So she has to hide again. But again she waited for it stoically and went out."

For Brown, the duchess has since done a good job of keeping her cool and waiting out the storm.

"And really, from the moment Camilla became Duchess of Cambridge, she [the Duchess of Cornwall] never stepped out of line.

"She is supportive. She is charming. She has been diligent [she has taken on many appropriate causes, like domestic violence, for which he has been very sincerely involved. And now she has made him ...... The best thing she did was make him an unconditionally happy man."

"And Prince Charles became such a man."

"And Prince Charles became such a man. [and since his marriage to Camilla, he has changed.
