Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's wedding dresses differ in one important detail
Just a couple of weeks ago, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary, and this week the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will celebrate their 4th wedding anniversary. For many royal watchers, one of the highlights of both days was Kate and Meghan's wedding dress choices - Kate's by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen and Meghan's by Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy. Both were knockout dresses and inspired countless brides.
How could we forget this dress, but let's refresh just in case: on April 29, 2011, then-Kate Middleton wore a corseted, lace-covered ivory gown.
On May 19, 2018, Meghan's stunner was pure white, with a looser fit and bateau neckline that exposed some of the bride's shoulders. While many brides break this rule, traditionally for royal weddings, the shoulders are covered in the church, making Meghan's gown more racy than Kate's. Meghan was able to take the risk because she was not marrying the heir to the throne, and Kate had to abide by all royal rules, says Harriet Castle of Public Desire (opens in new tab), who spoke to the Express about both dresses.
"Both of their wedding dresses were stunning and perfectly reflected their style and position in the family," she says.
"The necklines are one of the biggest differences. Kate opted for a V-neck, which was the fashion among brides at the time. Princess Meghan took more risks. Meghan's boat neck design was seen as a bit racy for a royal wedding, but it suited her perfectly".
And while both wedding gowns remain two of the most popular in modern times, according to a study examining worldwide monthly Google searches of the 15 most popular royal wedding dresses, Meghan's is the most popular.
"Meghan's wedding dress is officially the most searched for... Google searches than any other royal bride in the world," says the Express." Kate has the second favorite royal wedding dress in the world."
And even though the Queen's wedding took place over 74 years ago, her 1947 wedding dress ranks fifth, with an average of over 7,700 searches per month. Princess Diana's 1981 dress is the third most searched after her daughters-in-law, with an average of 30,000 searches per month.
