Kate Middleton helps a student find the answer to a crossword question about the queen.

Kate Middleton graduated from the prestigious University of St. Andrews with a 2:1 (the next highest degree after first class).

The Duchess of Cambridge showcased her academic prowess during her and Prince William's recent trip to Scotland. During a visit to the University of Glasgow, undergraduate student Jack Baird unceremoniously waved a copy of The Times at the Duchess and asked for a crossword clue. The clue to the question concerned the Queen and read, "The monarch's annual allowance."

Middleton played ball and took the newspaper away from Baird so he could look more closely.

"It was two words, a five-letter word and a four-letter word; I didn't recognize the second word," Baird told The Times (open in new tab) (via Vanity Fair). "I gave it to Kate and asked her if she would know it. And she said it was 'Civil List.' [She was very excited. She was very excited. I'm really relieved. I'm going to frame it and hang it up. She looked thrilled. I think she thought, 'I can't live with myself if I get this wrong.' To be fair, that would be true. I can't help but think of the notoriety of Queen Elizabeth II laughing at the Duchess during the Christmas lunch at Sandringham."

Baird had no intention of spying on the Cambridges, much less asking them to help him with the crossword. As he explained, "I was in the library studying for an exam, and I saw a group of people here, and I thought, 'What's going on?' It's a bit of a strange study break, but you won't see Baird complaining about it.
