Royal Family cost taxpayers over $120 million last year; Meghan and Harry remain financially independent

Each year, the royal family releases a financial report called the Sovereign Grant Report.

The 2021-22 report was released on June 29 and includes information on travel and other expenses incurred by various royal families during the year to March 31.

It has been widely noted that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not listed as having benefited from British taxes. Indeed, the only mention of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the 129-page report relates to their UK base, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, for which they paid their own personal rent. They also reimbursed taxpayers for home renovations totaling £2.4 million (US$2.9 million at current exchange rates) in September 2020.

A source close to the royals said that the Sussexes "should be congratulated for achieving their goal" of making millions of dollars in private money (via Express). These revenues come from a number of ventures, including a contract with Netflix, a deal with Spotify, Prince Harry's forthcoming memoir with Penguin Random House, and his role as chief impact officer of the startup company BetterUp.

Reports have circulated as if the Sussexes had just become financially independent, but they are reported to be standing on their own two feet as early as September 2020, which would be consistent with their repayment to Frogmore.

Meanwhile, the royal family's overall spending is £102.4 million ($124 million), which includes travel, salaries, staffing costs, property maintenance, utilities, and housekeeping.

Notably, the controversial Caribbean tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge cost £226,383 ($273,288) in charter flights alone. Many commentators took issue not only with the cost of the trip, but also with the Royal Family's historical connection to slavery, colonialism, and racism. The Cambridges have since expressed regret about their painful history.
