Simone Biles Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom: "I am very honored.

Simone Biles was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The 25-year-old Olympic gymnast is the youngest athlete ever to be awarded the medal.

"Today, she has more medals," President Biden said in presenting the award to Biles (via TIME). He then quipped, "I don't know how she's going to find room."

Accepting the medal on Instagram, the athlete said, "Medal of Freedom

" "I am so honored and grateful to be recognized by President Biden as the recipient of this prestigious award. I still have no words. I am in shock!"

Jonathan Owens, the player's fiancée, said, "I am so proud of you, baby ...... What an amazing experience."

Former Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin told her, "I am so proud of you."

According to the White House website, "The Presidential Medal of Freedom recognizes individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, security, world peace, or other significant social, public, or private efforts of the United States. It is the nation's highest civilian honor, awarded to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, security, world peace, or other important social, public, or private endeavors of the United States."

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor of the nation.

Biles received this honor not only for her contributions to U.S.A. gymnastics, of course, but also for her advocacy work in the areas of foster care (she herself was formerly a foster child), athlete mental health, and sexual assault survivor support.

President Biden posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom to 16 recipients, including soccer champion and activist Megan Rapinoe, Hollywood royalty Denzel Washington, and Steve Jobs and John McCain.
