Prince William and Prince Harry "were never allowed" to order late-night snacks, royal chef says

Sure, being royalty automatically means you get a large staff, including kitchen staff, but that doesn't mean you can eat whatever you want, day or night.

Once again, chef Darren McGrady regaled us with stories of his time working at Buckingham Palace.

"We never had any late orders!"

[7 Mac Grady said in an interview with Coffee Friend (opens in new tab). At Buckingham Palace, I lived in the chef's room above the kitchen, and no one knocked on the door and said, 'The Queen wants a club sandwich.'"

Not that the queen did not have access to food when she needed it: "In the queen's room there were bowls of fruit, chocolate, and the queen's favorite foods. In the Queen's room there were bowls of fruit, chocolates, and the Queen's favorite foods. Wills and Harry were also not allowed to call the chef in the middle of the night to cook something."

I suppose that is sort of normal.

Elsewhere in the interview, Mac Grady revealed how he made tea the way the Queen drinks it.

"Hot tea has to be hot," the chef explained.

"Tea must be absolutely boiling hot and steeped for five minutes. What is really, really important when brewing tea is to brew it in a teapot.

"What do you put in first? Is it milk or tea?"

Nowadays it is not so important, but in the old days the china was porcelain, and the boiling water would break the cup, so milk was put in first.

If you want the gossipy kind of tea rather than the drinkable kind, McGrady has previously revealed a number of previously unknown facts about the Royal Family's eating habits: in 2017, he told Marie Claire magazine about their most notable habits. Since then, he has elaborated on many juicy details, including the Queen's love of chocolate, young William and Harry's special Saturday night treats, the Queen's favorite cake recipe, Prince Charles' seasonal food preferences, and much more.
