Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's Royal Wedding Argument Was Over Tights and Dress Hem, Royal Writer Claims
Revisiting old wounds.
Tom Bower's controversial new claims about Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton in his biography Revenge have led to the hashtag #DuchessofTights trending on Twitter in the UK: Revenge. Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors (opens in new tab).
To understand what the heck is going on, we need to backtrack a bit.
In December 2018, The Sun published an article claiming that Meghan had made Kate cry before her wedding to Prince Harry because of a "stressful" dress fitting.
However, in March 2021, Meghan told Oprah Winfrey that Kate made her cry "the other way around."
Now, Bower hints that the original story has the right idea, but carefully explains that there is no way to know for sure what exactly happened behind the scenes.
Bower's version of what happened when the young bridesmaids were trying on wedding dresses is this: "Having just given birth to Louis, Kate was too tired to deal with the disagreement over whether the bridesmaids should wear tights. She had just given birth to Louis, so there was a disagreement over whether the bridesmaids should wear tights." Being from California, she was not interested in royal traditions," he wrote.
Markle's defenders took to Twitter to criticize Kate's concern about the tights policy, using the aforementioned hashtag.
In "Revenge," Bower continued. 'The disagreement followed an argument about the length of Charlotte's hem. Kate thought it was too short and it didn't fit anyway.
"Meghan's assistant, Melissa Tubati, and dress fitters hired by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller witnessed Meghan reject Kate's observations once and for all. Compromise was not a characteristic that Meghan accepted.
"This standoff, Kate decided, confirmed the frustration with Meghan by Tuvati and the rest of the staff. Kate burst into tears. Kirstie Allsopp, a friend of Camilla's, later admitted that Kate cried because of Megan's bullying of the staff.
(Buckingham Palace investigated claims that Meghan bullied staff, but did not release the findings - which many interpreted as the report exonerating Meghan.)
Bower further claims that Kate decided to bring flowers to make up with Meghan. He writes, "What happened next is irrefutable." 'In Kate's defense, Meghan slammed the door on her and threw the flowers in the trash. Meghan will tell Oprah Winfrey that the tears were shed by her, not Kate, and that the flowers were an apology."
The waters are so murky at this point that it is best not to draw undue conclusions about what really happened. After all, only Kate and Megan and those who witnessed their altercation know what happened.
