Prince Harry, Princess Diana's family thought they would see common ground with Meghan, but they didn't: Tom Bower

Meghan Markle and Princess Diana are often compared.

Both suffered greatly from their time as stalwarts of the royal family and were outsiders to some extent. They were also hounded by the tabloids.

Since the Sussex marriage, Princess Diana would be "proud" of Meghan; neither Meghan nor Diana were able to get what they wanted from the Queen; Meghan often acted like a mother-in-law and was said to be her "perfect copy."

However, according to royal author Tom Bower, Princess Diana's brother opposed the comparison between the two women and even warned Harry against marrying the "Suits" actress in 2017.

"By that time, Harry had introduced Meghan to Diana's two older sisters, Jane and Sarah, and his best friend Julia Samuel," Bower wrote in Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors" (opens in new tab).

"Harry assumed that Diana's family and friends would find common ground between her and his fiancée. That they both shared the same issues.

"He was disappointed. No one would have thought that his vulnerable mother and his girlfriend would have anything in common. What was even more offensive to him was that Meghan was perceived as not fitting in with the royal family.

"Their concerns were voiced by Charles Spencer, Diana's brother. At William's request, Spencer offered his opinion: having been married three times, he urged his nephew to reconsider his hasty marriage. His advice provoked a scathing response."

Of course, Prince Harry did not heed his uncle's advice and married Meghan in a lavish royal ceremony at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018.

They are happily married with two children, but unfortunately there has been a lot of tension between them and the rest of the royal family recently.
